Is this an economic practice that the US government or the state governments ought to ban, do you think?

those machines are in many stores but i have often seen the machine lines empty while people wait on a cashier to check them out in the next lane. which is the best way to protest the machines and protect the cashiers jobs. though i do not have the numbers i will ask if building and servicing the machines might not be a better job than cashier.
