Period problems - what could be wrong?

I have my periods regular but recently they have been heavy and painful. They are more or less like clockwork but i wondered why they are suddenly like this? Also my husband and i have been trying for a baby for about a year now with no avail, could this be connected? I am due to see a specialist cos i may have M.E. i have symptoms which the docs think could be this, could all these problems be connected to having M.E. if not what else could be wrong?
